Miley Cyrus overshadows Hannah with new album

Hannah Montana may be the most potent phenomenon in Hollywood right now — bigger than Batman, bigger than Brangelina. Yet these days, the girl who truly fascinates is not Hannah, but Miley Cyrus.

The 15-year-old face of the billion-dollar Disney franchise is no longer a star for just the tween set: She's intriguing people who turn the pages of Seventeen magazine, as well as Us Weekly and Vanity Fair (more on THAT later). While "Hannah" is still very much a part of Miley, it does not solely define the singer/actress.

Nowhere is that clearer than with the release of Miley's latest album, "Breakout," which comes out Tuesday. While Miley has already sold millions of albums, it's always been with the "Hannah Montana" moniker attached (2006's "Hannah Montana" and 2007's "Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus").

But there's no blonde wig to be found on the cover of this CD. Instead, there's a more mature sound that's already finding an older audience. The CD's first single, the rocker "7 Things," is now No. 9 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) and marks her biggest success in translating her music beyond the Radio Disney audience.

"To be played on these radio stations is awesome, to be able to rock out to it in your car without planning it, without it being just a kids channel," says Miley, who with her deep voice and self-assured manner seems a decade older that 15.

"(I'm) making it a little more fun and edgy, and I think being able to step out of the 'Hannah Montana' thing — not in a way where I'm forgetting her completely, but as my fans grow up, me growing up too and kind of having my own person."

The "Hannah Montana thing" is familiar to millions of kids and adults alike. A movie is due out next year, the third season of the kitschy TV show starts filming in weeks, and the DVD of the blockbuster "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds" tour, which wrapped up earlier this year, is a lock to top the charts when it debuts later this summer.

But navigating her own celebrity path outside the confines of famous character has proven to be difficult. With former teen phenoms like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears providing epic examples of bad behavior, and the nude photo scandal involving Disney "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens, tabloids have been eager to document a Miley implosion.

The first signs of potential concern came in the form of personal pictures that made their way onto the Internet, showing Miley dressed provocatively (though not obscenely) and setting the blogosphere abuzz.

A more serious firestorm erupted in April when Vanity Fair published a photo of Miley wrapped in a sheet, showing her bare back and shoulders. The photo caused such outrage that no less than The New York Times chronicled the controversy, and Miley and her father, country star Billy Ray Cyrus, said they regretted the result of the photo shoot. They also said she was never topless, as the photo by the esteemed Annie Leibovitz suggested.

But Miley has learned she doesn't even have to bare a shoulder to cause a fuss — as when she revealed in an interview earlier this month that "Sex and the City" was one of her favorite shows.

"It just scared people because there was the word 'sex' in the title, you know what I mean?" says Miley, brushing off her critics.

"Just because that's what the show is about that doesn't mean I'm doing that ... you don't all the sudden become the character that you watch," she adds (though looking very Carrie Bradshaw-ish in a long flowing blue bohemian dress, her hair cascading down her shoulders, with a Chanel bag close to her side).

While allowing that she's made "mistakes," she also feels that the media has been unforgiving in their scrutiny at times — and a bit unwilling to see that she's not a little kid anymore.

"It's kind of hard to let someone that was so young when they started kind of grow up," reasons Miley, who was 13 when she debuted in the role. "You just have to realize that people make mistakes and that makes you almost a little more relatable."

Hollywood Records A&R executive Jon Lind, who worked with Miley on the "Hannah Montana/Meet Miley Cyrus" album and her latest record, says such scrutiny is just a part of today's tabloid world.

"I don't think she's really done anything scathingly wrong, but I think there's a lot of people selling a lot of magazines following her around, making her into the next somebody, and I don't think that's fair — she's not the next anybody as far as I can see," he says.

He adds that he's seen a significant growth in Miley in just the past year: "The difference between being a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old in any tween or teenager's life is an extraordinary amount — it's like dog years."

Much of that growth is reflected on her new CD. While she co-wrote a majority of the songs on the "Meet Miley Cyrus" half of the last record, on "Breakout," her songs have a weightier tone, discussing the environment, breakups and relationships.

"She always reached the adult audience, because she always reached moms. It's just in a way that radio finally started to acknowledge," says Sean Ross of Edison Media Research, which tracks the radio industry. "'7 Things,' ... has a little bit of an Avril Lavigne-thing going; it sounds like an adult record."

"There are lots of people who wouldn't necessarily wanna buy or listen to a 'Hannah Montana' record because of their predisposition to the Disney television character," says Lind. "But if you listen to this record as an artist, the quality of her voice, the quality of her writing, and the quality of the production, I hope, as she does, that it will be taken seriously by (an) older music audience."

"I hope I get respected a little bit more as a writer," says Miley. "I want them to respect me and know that I have a lot to say, I have a lot for the world to know and take away from what my life experiences have been."

She'd also hoping to show more of those life experiences in her acting. She's like to do some independent films and play gritty characters: "I do wanna, like, showcase a little more of what I can do, and also some different situations ... I would like to do something that was a little more deep."

She's even hoping to add a little bit more of an edge to "Hannah" next season.

"There's some things that I want to reinvent with her look, and not make it all sparkles and butterflies, you know? Some stars, and some black rock 'n' roll stuff," she says. "I did want it to grow up a little bit."

But lest anyone fear that she's growing up a bit too much, she's quick to point out that's she hasn't grown out of "Hannah."

"I probably won't tour again as a 'Hannah Montana' tour ... I'm kind of past that stuff. But I definitely wanna keep doing my show. I love doing (it) and I wouldn't wanna give it up quite yet."

Miley Cyrus: "I Don’t Think There Could Be a 'Next Miley'"

Miley doesn't think so.

Following her controversial Vanity Fair cover, some pegged Disney singers Selena Gomez or Demi Lovato as two wholesome girls who could fill the teen queen's shoes. But the 15-year-old Hannah Montana star tells Extra, "I don’t think there could be a next Miley. I think they should be the next Selena, the next Demi ... [and] make their own way.”

She says she takes it as a compliment that "people are looking up to what I do." Still, she says she'll always have to deal with media attention. "Instead of putting negativity to it," Cyrus says, "I'm taking the opportunity to make it a positive thing.”

Being in the public eye "gives me an opportunity to voice those decisions, those things I go through a little more publicly, and hopefully they help people out in their lives," she says.

Cyrus says she is already gearing up to host the Teen Choice Awards in August. “I’ve already got my outfits," Cyrus says. " I want to be very different. Sequins are definitely very fun for me, but I’m getting kind of over doing the 'sequins thing.' Hopefully, I can break some new fashions.”

Miley Cyrus Calls Vanity Fair Photos "a Mistake"

Miley Cyrus is continuing to speak out about her infamous Vanity Fair photos. She called the shots "a mistake" during an interview on ABC's Good Morning America.

"I think I was just in a stage where I was just trying to get things done, and maybe look for an older audience," the 15-year-old Hannah Montana star said. "I was working with a big magazine just trying to go with what they were saying."

She described the criticism she received after the issue (which reportedly sold an impressive 435,000 newsstand copies) as a "hard time," adding that she now "knows what it's like to have people talk about you like you're kind of iron.

"People need to remember that I am young and that I do have feelings, and I'll do the same thing for them," Cyrus added. "Anyone who was 15 years old can't say they haven't made a mistake. So I think it's just normal."

Since the incident, she said that she has learned "to stay true" to herself, adding, "I think it does make me more relatable [to my fans]."

Cyrus — whose new album Breakout drops Tuesday — said she didn't know if she "could go back to a normal life."

"I think it would be too hard," she addd. "It's weird because I feel very normal... but then sometimes I want to go to the mall... and I'm thinking I'm totally gonna be fine and be able to shop around, [but] it's not like it is for a normal teenager."

"It will be really funny when I'm laughing with my friends and they're like 'OK, you're on a totally different planet,' because I'm like 'Oh, I bet that's how school is and this and that...'

"My friends are like, 'Oh my gosh, it's totally different. It is not all happy and smiley. It's probably much harder than your job, what you do Miley,'" Cyrus said

Anyways, today was a great day, I took a break (a day off) and pampered myself with Brandi! We had an awesome time at the spa! I hope we can have more sister/sister bonding time. I actually made that "banner" but I do love to recieve fan art like that one. I hope everyone is okay at stardoll.

Emily called me like 10 mins ago, she says hi. It was so funny cause she didn't realize SHE called me, so she was all "so miles, why did you call me?" I was laughing my head off, what a dork! I was on Stardoll like usual, and some poser named RealCelebMiley. is all "how come your not real celeb then, I am really miley cyrus! I have all the proof in the world" and I was thinking, what proof, she has all these FAKE stamps all over her presentation that Callie specifically said that "WE DON'T MAKE STARDOLL CELEB STAMPS" in a message. Cool Fact: Believe it or not, Miley Cyrus is a VEGETARIAN!

Biography~

Born Destiny Hope Cyrus, her sunny personality soon changed her name to Miley at home. Her father, country star and actor Billy Ray Cyrus, nicknamed her "Miley" because she is "always full of smiles". Now every Disney Channel lover knows her as Miley Cyrus, the star of Disney's newest original show: Hannah Montana, where Miley plays a regular girl called Miley Stewart who has a secret double life as the biggest singing superstar of tv.

It took a lot to this 13-year-old to earn the role of Disney's new tv queen. "All this hard work I've done my entire life is about to pay off," she says. She isn't recalling only the audition callback which started with 1000 girls, but the dedication she's put into singing and acting for years. Daughter of a counrty star who crossed over tv, Miley has been taking parts as extras in her Dad's shows since forever, and most recently was cast for an episodes in his drama series "Doc", aswell as tge role of Ruthie in "Big Fish" at age eight.

Singing and playing the guitar have been a huge part of her life too. She assures she has written over 100 songs already. In fact, one of them will be featured in Hannah Montana. She is now recording one new song per episode so that will make over 20 songs by the end of the season, however, no soundtrack has been confirmed yet. When asked about the soundtrack, Miley stated by now the goal is making the best show possible plus there will be a Hannah Montana soundtrack over the summer, "or a Miley Cyrus album" she added. Soundtrack or not, Miley Cyrus will certainly be releasing an album sooner or later. She is signed with Hollywood Records for a four-album record deal.

Gary Marsh, Disney Channel entertainment president said they chose Miley for the role of Hannah Montana because they saw a girl who has this natural ebullience and loves every minute of her life, which shows in her demeanor and performance.

When she's not performing, Miley enjoys the company of her five siblings, Christopher, Braison Chance, Brandi, Trace and Noah Lindsey, and her dog Loco who lives with them in Los Angeles. The rest of her dogs, cats, horses, chickens and cows had to stay at their Nashville, Tennessee home when they moved to LA last December 2005 to start the filming. Miley had to say goodbye to her whole-life friends, so her new lifestyle also includes long hours on the phone plus the LA need: shopping. "I'm a big shoe person. Sometimes I'll be punky, the next day I'll be preppy. Every day after work, my mom and I go shopping. My dad is about to kill me. I say, 'We need it, daddy!'"

My life has been so great and I couldn't be happier. I am reading a lot more, which is good....okay fine, I'm reading yea, but only music lyrics and scripts....that still counts though! I just got done looking at my stardoll, and got SO many friend requests, except MileyCyrus1122 or was is 2211....anyways, she says I'm rude....what did I ever do to her??? Well, I am still in the middle of filming a new episode with Heather Locklear, and I gotta say, she is a lotta fun. OMG, me and Em were ya know talking, and Heather scared the crud out of me, Em knew she was right behind me, but I got so scared, I was like screaming my head off. My mom was also on the set, she tries to come sometimes. I had fun. We are at the scene where my dad and "Lily"'s mom are at the door going over the "lists" {you'll see...} and its so funny cause Em keeps messing up! I am always laughing at her! Poor Em. Em's comin over for dinner today, we'll probably have homemade lasagna! Yum...anyways, gotta run, more work to do!

Miley is such a sweetie, it's not surprise that she has so many friends! Some of her Celeb friends are Emily Osment, he costar, Ashley Tisdale, Spencer Locke, and Amy Bruckner. She has real life friends too like Tory Lou, Lesley Patterson, Jenna Lars, and much much more! Her school friends from Tennessee are May Johnston, Laura Finkle, and Kelly Van Patten and Krystal Maritno. Her best friend of all friends, is Brandi her sister. SHe loves all her friends and family!
